Awo-Omamma is one of the villages in Oru-East Local Government Area, Imo State, Nigeria.

It’s also under the Catholic diocese of Orlu, Imo State, in the Orlu Diocese St. Basil is under St. Theresa’s Pastoral region Uli Anambra State.

Awo-Omamma has thirteen villages and as a town has six parishes which includes St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Isieke (the mother parish), Christ the King Parish Okwuoji second Parish followed by St. Basil the great Parish Awo-Omamma which is the third and others like St. Mary’s parish Ubogwu, St. John Ubachima and St. Anthony Umuezukwe respectively.

St. Basil the great Parish Awo-Omamma was inaugurated in the year 2001, the parish since inauguration has made some might waves both at home, regional and diocesan levels, it has produced seven indigenous priests. This parish has been talk of the town in terms of their youths among her sister parishes, the parish has been progressive in the sense that no parish within the Pastoral region does not know them, the parish has produced men of honors who have served the Catholic Youth Organization of Nigeria (CYON)  both at diocesan and regional level.

Since the parish was in the Igbo region of Nigeria, she has taken Igbo culture as a prior culture and their exhibition of the Igbo tradition has been obvious in the sense that they always have annual cultural fiesta in their parish. Since its inauguration it has celebrated this cultural fiesta three times and all was talk of the town.

They display so many kinds of Igbo tradition like wrestling which is in Igbo Language known as Mgba, folk tales (ifo), Riddles (gwam gwam gwam) to mention but few.

On the 26th day of September 2021 been Sunday, St. Basil the great Parish Awo-Omamma had her recent cultural fiesta in a tremendous and magnificent style. It was a wonderful event as the ceremony started with holy mass celebration which was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Aloysius Anudu, the parish priest of the parish at 9:30am, during the mass, some events took places like giving of awards of honours to her industrious sons and some of the awards titles are “Ide ji ụlọ of St. Basil”, pillars of CYON and so on. After the holy mass followed entertainment and displays of our cultural heritage, history and dances.

The ceremonial aspect of it was done in the church premises and so many Igbo heritage was displayed like Iwa akwa.

Iwa akwa in Igbo Language which literally means (dressing up in Igbo attire or wearing of Igbo clothes) was exhibited in the sense that our Igbo attire or dressing code was to be seen among the contestants to know who will be able to get the exact Igbo attire and how fast the person can do it.

The second of the Igbo tradition that was displayed was the preparation of one Igbo meal called upoo and Upoo is prepared in a very special way in Igbo tradition which is used to eat yam both roasted and boiled one cum three-leaf yam and below is the video

Another one was the preparation of Igbo soup called "Mchichirimala" which is prepared in a very unique way used in eating fufu or garri as case may be, some people call it 'Nwam agbala ọnụ eje akwụkwọ' which literally means in English ( my child should not go to school empty stomach)

Final but not the least was the cultural dance of Igbo tradition and dramas

The event was so great in the sense that all the activities displayed proved that Igbo tradition is the best tradition and as such has to be proud of.
